Tour of Shannonbridge's fortifications launched

A tour of Shannonbridge's fortifications that links up with a boat trip to Clonmacnoise was launched last evening (Thursday) broadly in line with the town fortification's 200th anniversary. The tour will see participants first taking a boat trip to Clonmacnoise on the 'River Queen' before returning to Shannonbridge for a tour of the town's old fortifications. Shannonbridge's fortifications are thought to have been built in approximately 1812, making them the grand old age of 200 this year. The new tour is designed to mark the event. Funding towards signage and conservation works helped to bring the project to its current launch point. The project will be run by locals involved with the Community Employment Scheme, with an office located in Shannonbridge's Lockhouse. Depending on demand tours will be given daily at noon and 3pm.
