Charleville Castle hosts Shakefest

This weekend is Shakefest weekend. The popular festival takes place at Charleville Castle in Tullamore on Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26, with all proceeds going towards the Charleville Castle Restoration Fund.

The event - a celebration of dance and culture - was first staged in 2006. This weekend’s festival will include interactive activities and performances for all ages, as well as food stalls, art and craft stalls and a spontaneous art area for children.

Back at Shakefest this year is the “Live History” section, where Knight Hospitaller Ireland medieval re-enactors treat audiences to combat re-enactments as well as medieval tents where visitors can try on armory and archery.

Another highlight at this year’s festival is international guest instructor Mariel Sitka. Mariel runs her own school - Brisas de Oriente - and is also manager of the Kazafy Troupe in Argentia. Mariel will conduct three workshops in the Nubian African, Bedouin Haggalah and Classical style as well as a finger cymbals workshop over the weekend.

For dance enthusiasts visiting Charleville Castle this weekend workshops include hip hop. poi, Irish dance, samba and hula hoop. Evening performances include a mulicultural hafla, a cabaret and a fire show.
