Offaly play nominated for best drama ppi radio award

An Offaly playwriting festival that spawned seven new plays in just seven days has led to a prestigious PPI radio award nomination for best drama.

‘Meat and Blue WKD’ by Gillian Greer was selected as best radio play at last year’s Scripts festival in Birr. It’s now been selected as a finalist in the best drama category of the 12th PPI radio awards.

Dealing with the sensitive issue of a girl recalling a drunken night, ‘Meat and Blue WKD’ was later produced and aired on local station Midlands 103 with Angela Ryan Whyte in the leading role, input from esteemer director George B Miller and recording and editing by David Weymes.

Additional voiceovers and support came from Mairead Brennan, Raymond Whyte and Rory Weymes.

The play is in good company at the upcoming PPI awards, with productions from RTE1, BBC Radio Ulster and Beat 102-103 also in the running for the prize.

All will be revealed at a ceremony in Kilkenny next Friday, October 3.
