Cllr Eddie Fitzpatrick has queried some of the costs involved in administering the paid parking in Edenderry town.
He raised the issue at the last meeting of the Edenderry Area Committee. A total running cost of €79,167 was recorded for the 12 month period from January 2009 to January 2010.There are five categories where the cost is directed; the traffic warden's salary, the security cash collection, costs of administration, the up-keep of parking spaces in the town and machine maintenance.
Cllr Fitzpatrick says he was "very surprised" at the cost incurred in relation to the security cash collection which is €23,512.
"This figure seems extremely high, but the director of services Mr Heslin said the cost will be the same over the next 12 months," he said. "He assured the members that the revenue from the paid parking will increase when a further 50 spaces become available with the movement of the bus stop from the market square to an alternative area, this is expected to be in place within the next month."
Cllr Fitzpatrick says he will certainly be watching the progress in relation to cutting costs.
