The mass goers of Tullamore parish have proved to be extremely generous as over €40,000 was collected to help the people of Haiti following the recent earthquake.
The special collection was taken up at all masses in Tullamore parish last weekend. The money will be sent directly to Haiti through the Diocese of Meath.
Bishop Smith is in frequent contact with an Irish missionary Sister Mary Hardiman, who is a Holy Union Sister working in Haiti. The Bishop supports various projects run by Sister Mary. Her work includes caring for orphans, elderly, prisoners and people suffering from HIV/AIDS. Trócaire, the Catholic Church's own aid agency, is working with 'Caritas Haiti', which runs over 200 hospitals and medical centres in the country. They are skilled in the provision of clean water and sanitation, which will be crucial in this response.
The parish team would like to express their thanks to all who contributed so generously to the appeal, and further contributions are most welcome.
