Geashill man to climb Kilimanjaro

Tommy Spollen, of Ballydowman Geashill Offaly, will shortly head to Africa as part of the ChildAid Annual Kilimanjaro Trek. The Kilimanjaro Trek is a tough high altitude trek that leads participants to Africa's Highest Peak.

In order to take part in the trip Tommy has had to raise €5,000, which he has achieved by running a number of events. The funds Tommy has raised will help ChildAid further develop their flagship project at Kwe Njenga School Mukuru slum, Nairobi. The school currently feeds and educates 2000 students a day, but demand for places is still high, and ChildAid plans to add another six classrooms to the facility in 2011.

Tommy will see first hand ChildAid's flagship project as part of his trip in August, because, as ChildAid believes it is vital that those who have fundraised see the fruits of their labour the expedition, as always, includes a visit to Kwe Njenga School. Tommy will also visit other ChildAid projects to get a feel for the problems African children and families face every day.

The trip commences on August 2 and Tommy will spend a total of 12 days in Africa.
