Sr Bosco Daly from Tullamore will travel to Rome to see her former student become a cardinal at a ceremony in St Pater's Basilica.

A Sister of Mercy based in the order's Tullamore convent is getting set for a very special journey. Next Tuesday Sr Bosco Daly, who is in her 80s, will jet off to Rome as the invited guest of her former student Timothy Dolan at a ceremony that will see him become a cardinal.

A native of Kilbeggan, Sr Bosco had been based in Drogheda since entering the convent in 1944. Falling numbers saw the Drogheda convent close however and just four months ago Sr Bosco made the move to Tullamore.

A teacher by trade, Sr Bosco spent 20 years in Missouri in the United States of America. It was while teaching in the Holy Infant School in the town of Ballwin that she first met the then eight year old Timothy Dolan. Sr Bosco taught Timothy in second, fourth and fifth grade and the strong bond between the two has remained in place ever since.

Sr Bosco was there for Timothy's confirmation, and later helped him choose liturgies and songs for his first Mass as a priest in his hometown. She was also in Rome in 2009 when he became an archbishop and again now she will be his guest when he becomes a cardinal on Saturday week, February 18.

Sr Bosco said she got the call "once he heard the news" and is now really looking forward to her trip.

"I'm very proud of him," she said, adding that she never thought she'd live to see him take this step.
