Have a fit festive season - HSE

The HSE is this week suggesting an active Christmas as a way to enjoy festive cheer while also burning off extra party season calories. Half an hour of exercise five times a week is recommended for adults, while an hour every day is suggested for children and young people. "Even moderate intensity activities, such as brisk walking (1 mile in 15-20 minutes), cycling (slower than 10 miles and hour), ballroom dancing, or work around the home such as brisk hoovering, will be of benefit," Physical Activity Co-ordinator for the Midlands Clodagh Armitage said. "Whatever activity you are doing, once your heart is beating faster than normal and your breathing is harder than normal, it is good for your health." Wrapping up and getting out for a walk over the Christmas is one of the suggested ways to get active. The HSE suggests downlaoding Sli na Slainte route maps from www.irishheart.ie. If it's more than a walk you'd like, www.getirelandactive.ie is a dedicated resource for people who want to become more physically active. The site is updated regularly by local clubs and sports partnerships, with many listed activities free. Fit4Life is a programme run by Athletics Ireland and local sports partnerships for people interested in running for fun. Beginners are welcome, with more info at http://www.offalysports.ie. Finally, charity GOAL miles taking place over the festive season offer a chance for some exercise too. Events take place in Offaly this year in Birr and Tullamore on Christmas Day at 1pm and 10am until noon respectively, in Ferbane on December 26 at 1pm and in Geashill on December 27 from 11.30am until 1pm.
