Volunteer Centre already exists
Offaly has a thriving volunteer centre that connects volunteers to organisations that need them. That's according to Tullamore town councillor Molly Buckley, who was responding to a motion put forward by fellow councillor Tony McCormack at last week's town council meeting suggesting that the council put such a programme in place. Though not known by all, a volunteer centre is run by Offaly Local Development Company in Millennium House on Tullamore's Main Street. Co-ordinator Mary Brady said the service has been running for two years now and has involved 170 volunteers and 100 local groups. The service is in essence a meeting point for volunteers and organisations. Both register with the centre, and Ms Brady finds suitable matches. Garda vetting is also provided. "It's a very good service," Cllr Buckley said this week. "Matching the skill with the work is crucial, but it's all very well done and it makes it very easy for organisations and volunteers." Cllr McCormack originally brought the motion to the council as he said many skilled people locally now find themselves unemployed but want to contribute to the community. Cllr Buckley agreed, saying there are "so many people out there now with so many skills".
