Tubber Foroige enjoyed a great year from September 2007 to June 2008. Activities included badminton, hockey, table tennis, card playing, air hockey, listening to music, board games, meeting up with friends, bowling, swimming and going to discos. The highlight for most members was a trip to Horizon Adventure Centre in Mayo, which took place in June. All members who attended the Offaly Foroige Sports Events in Ballycumber also had a great day and enjoyed taking part. In October the club took part in a bed push along with other Foroige groups in the county and raised €8,200 for People in Need. In April this year Tubber Foroige did a sponsored stay-awake and donated the proceeds to the OSPCA.
The group is looking forward to getting back together again soon but this cannot happen without adult supervision, therefore there will be a meeting in the Community Hall on Tuesday, September 16 at 9pm for adults only to elect leaders and to seek volunteers who are willing to help out for an hour occasionally. Anyone over 18 years of age is welcome and your attendance would be greatly appreciated.

Last year"s Chamber Quids proved to be a huge success story with over €63,000 being sold. The retail committee was genuinely surprised at the level of support with which the retail community embraced the Chamber Quids project. The Quids are available earlier this year and to reflect this we hope to sell in excess of €120,000 this year. The vouchers CANNOT be spent outside Tullamore so it"s a great way to support your local business community. The Chamber makes no money from this scheme with the printing costs kindly being sponsored by Tullamore Town Council. Letters are currently being sent out to all businesses asking that they support this scheme and by doing so support the local community. For a large company to agree to give the Chamber Quids as Christmas or performance bonuses they are effectively agreeing to keep local money in the local economy thus supporting employment. We would ask that employers adopt this scheme and ensure that Tullamore remains a hive of retail activity. The following businesses have agreed to take the Chambers Quids with many more indicating their interest: Vero Moda, Dolan"s One Hour Photo, Quirke"s Medical Hall, Beccara, Tyrell"s, Cahill Jewellers, Café 4 U, Print Plus, Dolan"s Pharmacy, Siroccos, The Office Centre, O Sullivan Photography, Cloonan"s Hardware, Recharge Cartridges, Tullamore Court Hotel, Bridge House Hotel, Axis Architecture, Galvin"s for Men, The Yaadgar restaurant, Signature, Da Vinci"s, NIS Computers Ltd, Dotser, Nationwide Cellular, Days Hotel, Tullamore Fuels, 3 Mobile, Heffernan"s Filling Station and Off Licence, Hanlon"s Butchers, J & M Douglas Jewellers, Sterling Jewellers, McKenna Electrical, Balcony Books, Heartbeat City, Adams Chemists, Hallmark, McKeon"s Shoes, Jen Joe 4 Kids, Cards n Things, Tormeys Butchers, Brookville House, Ritzy"s Hair Salon, Classy Clogs, Wild Harvest, Sweater World, Bentleys, Boston, ACME Blinds, Kit Your Kitchen, Lynch"s Off Licence. If you want to add your business to the list please contact the Chamber office on 057 9323698.
There is an added benefit with gift vouchers as the tax advantage is substantial. From January 1, 2007, under the Revenue Commissioners approved Small Benefits Exemption Scheme, companies can reward staff up to €250 as a once off payment completely tax and PRSI free. If you are interested in participating in this scheme please call Gail in the Chamber office. We need as many employers as possible to see the advantages of this project and give the Quids as Christmas bonuses to their staff this Christmas.
A midlands speed networking event is being held in the Tullamore Court Hotel next Thursday, September 11 from 3pm to 5pm, hosted by the three Midland Chambers in Tullamore, Mullingar and Athlone and Offaly and Westmeath Enterprise Boards as part of Enterprise Week. Pre-booking is essential, and today is the last chance to do so. To register contact Orla in the Offaly County Enterprise Board on 057 9352971.
Tullamore Chamber has begun collecting contributions towards the erection of Christmas light. There was a shortfall of €1,500 last year, and if enough money is not collected this year the lights will be erected on a street by street basis. Any retailers who have contributed towards the lights but whose street has not given enough to support lights will have their money returned. We would ask all retailers to support this venture this year because if not enough money is collected this year there will be no Christmas light next year.

KILLURIN AND DISTRICT NOTES
Killurin man is hero in Ibiza
Keith Dunne, son of Aiden and Jacqueline, was a hero last weekend when he and his uncle John Mitchell from Gortnamona were involved in the dramatic saving of a four-year-old child who got into serious trouble in a swimming pool in Ibiza. Keith and John reacted swiftly and immediately came to the child"s assistance, which has since received notable coverage in the Irish national media.
Killurin win over 35s soccer final
Killurin 1 Clonmore United 0
Killurin won the Over 35"s Shield Final on Saturday evening last in Clara in an exciting and well-contested game. Both sides created opportunities but it was Barry Dolan qho broke the deadlock with the winning goal ten minutes from time. Congratulations to the team and all involved.
Sympathy is extended to the family and relatives of the late Larry Fogarty, formally Killurin, who died recently in England.
Hit and run incident
Catherine Quinn, Gorteen was the unfortunate victim of a hit and run incident while out walking near her home on the Clonaslee road recently. Thankfully Catherine is recovering satisfactorily and is wished well.
Championship: Killurin 0-11 Killeigh 1-9
With both sides already through to the knock-out stages of the Junior A Hurling Championship by virtue of their drawn game the previous week, Killurin and Killeigh played out another exciting and close contest on Saturday evening last in the play-off to determine order of qualification. On this occasion, Killeigh emerged with a single point to spare at the Ballinamere venue in front of a sizeable attendance in good playing conditions. It was a very balanced affair, the sides were level on three occasions, the lead exchanged and there was no more than two points between the sides at any stage. Killurin trailed by the minimum margin 1-5 to 0-7, but the best of the games" hurling was reserved for the second half. Within a minute of the re-start, Paddy Grennan equalised for Killurin but Killeigh soon regained the lead. There followed a barren period of 20 minutes in which there was some good hurling but no scores to reward the efforts. Killurin recorded a succession of wides and had realistic goal opportunities that ultimately was to prove costly. Paddy Grennan"s point seven minutes from full time levelled matters and when Killeigh again took the lead, two well taken points in succession from Joseph Brady gave Killurin the delicate advantage as the game came to a close. However, Killeigh were to finish the more accurate and responded with two late points to take the honours. This outcome means that Killurin will now face Edenderry in the quarter final, with the fixture expected in two weeks time.
Killurin: Owen Dillon, Alan Dunne, David Brazil, Gary Brazil, Darryl Kilroe, Thomas Brady, Kevin Keenahan, Jimmy Keenahan (0-2), Andrew Brazil, Michael Monaghan, Edward Casey (Captain), (0-2) Joseph Brady (0-2), Adrian Leonard, Paddy Grennan (0-2), Dwayne Dunne (0-3). Substitutes introduced, Brian Gleeson for M. Monaghan. Christopher Keenahan for D Dunne.
Lotto Draw: The numbers drawn in last weeks club lotto draw were 1, 2, 5 and 22. There was no jackpot winner so it will now increase to €1,400. There was one match 3 winner - Kathleen Daly, The Cottage, Mountbolus. The promoters prizes were won by John Dunne and John McEvoy.
Birthday greetings to John McEvoy, Killurin who celebrates his birthday this week.
Get well wishes
Best wishes for a speedy recovery to full health to Jarlath Dunne, Killurin who was hospitalised recently.
Congratulations to Jean Brady, Killurin and St Sinchill"s player who was part of the successful Offaly Camogie team that won the All-Ireland Under 18 B Final on Sunday last against Waterford in Athy. Offaly enjoyed a comfortable 4-14 to 2-7 victory.
Good luck to both the Killeigh Under 14 girls team and the Junior Ladies in their respective County Finals this weekend.
Killurin cyclist Francine Meehan did very well while competing in a three day event in Germany last weekend. On Friday, she was the second Irish female home while on Saturday in a 12 by 5.6km lap race around the town of Paderborne, she was the third Irish lady to cross the line in a very fast race. On Sunday in a 7 lap by 8.4km race in Herbram, Francine finished 19th overall and the second Irish lady. The previous weekend at home, the Killurin cyclist was hit form again in winning the Westport 2 day event and on Thursday got first overall lady in the Midlands League.
