Tullamore hospital gets world recognition for design

The Midland Regional Hospital at Tullamore received international recognition recently.

The architectural design of the new hospital was highly commended at the most respected awards in the healthcare building environment.

After a submission to the Building Better Healthcare Awards by Murray O"Laoire Architects, which celebrates and rewards the very best in healthcare building projects, the hospital was placed second to the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne, whis was specifically awarded for its Northern Centre for Cancer Care and Renal Services Centre.

The "highly commended" achievement was awarded in the category for "best international hospital design" in which the shortlist is regarded as having "an outstanding hospital scheme that places both patients and the environment at the heart of the project and brings the hospital into the city or townscape". Speaking about the achievement, Peter Waters, Hospital Manager at the Midland Regional Hospital at Tullamore said: 'It is great to be considered among the cream of the crop in the world for healthcare design and architecture. There is no doubt that the patient was at the forefront of all our plans.'

'Last December we managed the final transition from the old to the new hospital, which was one of the biggest hospital moves in the history of the Irish health service, it was rewarding for both management and staff to be a part of that, but there was also exceptional pleasure in witnessing the patients" satisfaction with the hospital,' he added.
