Tullamore woman Laura Quinn is to feature on the 'Inspired by Diabetes' calendar after being one of 12 winners in a creative competition where people with diabetes were asked to express how diabetes has impacted their lives.

There was a strong response to the competition that was run nationally by Lilly, a company with a heritage in diabetes, and the Diabetes Federation of Ireland. The calendar was launched this week to mark World Diabetes Day, which takes place tomorrow (Saturday).

Speaking at the launch of the calendar, contemporary figurative artist, and member of the 'Inspired by Diabetes' competition judging panel, Rasher (Mark Kavanagh), said: "It is fantastic to see people with diabetes expressing themselves through art and photography. It is a great way of portraying feelings and emotions without having to use written words and the quality of the entries was of a very high standard."

Each entrant to the competition receives two blue pins, which is the international symbol for diabetes. Lilly is also making a donation for each entry received, to the International Diabetes Federation's Life for a Child programme which is helping to raise much needed funds for the treatment of diabetes in areas of the world that are less fortunate than we are. Funds raised from the sale of the 'Inspired by Diabetes' calendar will go to the Diabetes Federation of Ireland.

Kieran O'Leary, CEO, Diabetes Federation of Ireland commented:

"This was a very unique way in which members of the diabetes community were able to express their feelings on the impact of diabetes on their daily lives.

I am sure many people with diabetes will recognise and empathise with many of the challenges and triumphs highlighted in the calendar.

I do hope this competition will grow next year and will see an even higher number of entries."

In Ireland, it is estimated that there are 200,000 people living with diabetes and many are unaware that they have the condition. The majority of these people will only be diagnosed after a complication arises from the condition.

The 'Inspired by Diabetes' calendar costs €5 and can be purchased through any of the Diabetes Federation of Ireland offices or by calling 1850 90 909 or 01 836 3022.
