A new nuclear medicine department at the Midlands Regional Hospital in Tullamore welcomed its first patient on Wednesday. The new department is part of radiology services that will be offered at the hospital for patients. News of the opening was revealed in a letter from hospital manager Orlagh Claffey to Tullamore town councillor Brendan Killeavy, who says he he has been campaigning to have the department opened for the past year. Thanking the hospital manager and staff Cllr Killeavy said the announcement is "great news" this week, as up until now patients had to travel to other hospitals to avail of the service. Hospital management described the opening of the service as "a significant undertaking", involving equipment commissioning, staff training and the granting of an operating licence.
