Birr to get a splash of colour with makeover

Birr is to get a facelift thanks to an initiative by Birr Chamber of Commerce. Last Wednesday business people from the town met with Dulux colour consultant Kathy Bracken and David Larkin in the County Arms Hotel, and over the next month the town is set to get a splash of colour as businesses on Emmet Square, O'Connell Street, Main Street, Market Square and parts of Connaught Street complete their own parts of the town makeover. Speaking to the Offaly Independent President of Birr Chamber of Commerce Martin Kearns said colours have been chosen for 82 buildings in the selected makeover area. Last week's meeting enjoyed a healthy turnout and over 20 businesses signed up to paint their premises the colour chosen for it by Ms Bracken. Anyone who couldn't make the meeting is welcome to get in touch with Mr Kearns, who can pass on details of the colour scheme. A large portion of the community appears to be on board with this project. Paint is being provided for the project at cost price by W K Fayles, while ten percent discount is being given on all related purchases. Local painters have also offered their services at keen prices. Mr Kearns said the weather is helping the cause, and some began work the morning after this week's meeting. "I even see this morning when I was out for a walk people are starting power washing," he said on Thursday. It's hoped the selected area of the town will be completely made over within the next month. "It's great to see the town getting a facelift," Mr Kearns said. "It'll enhance the town, especially coming into the summer."
