The Offaly Independent is saddened to learn of the death of the former Irish Times journalist Sean MacConnell.
Mr MacConnell was the father of former Offaly Independent reporter and Tullamore resident Eoghan MacConnell, who has since gone on to work in a freelance capacity.
Mr MacConnell himself spent a number of years in Tullamore, whilst working as the midlands correspondent for the Irish Times.
Sixty-six year old Mr MacConnell passed away unexpectedly this morning (Wednesday, September 4) at St James’s Hospital.
Sean MacConnell joined the Irish Times as a senior reporter in 1986, and became the paper’s midlands correspondent in 1997.
He returned to the newspaper’s Dublin newsroom in 2001 after being appointed agriculture correspondent.
Mr MacConnell retired in 2012, wrapping up a journalism career that began in the Roscommon Champion newspaper and also included the Roscommon Herald, the Free Press Wexford, the Irish Press and the Irish Times.
He is survived by his wife Pat; children Kate, Siobhan and Eoghan; brothers Cormac, Cathal and Mickey; sons-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
