President of Tullamore pipe band Tony Healion laid to rest

The president of the world champion St Colmcille’s Pipe Band is this morning (Monday) being buried at Clonminch cemetery in the town.

Tony Healion of Cappincur, Tullamore passed away peacefully last Friday morning, November 29, at the Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore.

Tony tutored no fewer than six members of the pipe corps that became world champions in Glasgow earlier this year, but according to the pipe band his influence far exceeded that of a teacher.

“Success like what we’ve enjoyed in recent times wouldn’t have been remotely attainable but for his contribution,” the band said on its Facebook page on the day of his death.

Tony reposed at O’Reilly’s funderal home on Harbour Street yesterday evening from 5pm, with removal at 6.15pm to the Church of the Assumption. Requiem Mass took place this morning at 10am, after which Tony’s body was accompanied by pipe band members through the town of Tullamore to Clonminch cemetery.

Tony is predeceased by his wife Philomena and son Niall. Mourners today include his sister Ann, brothers Tommy and Alo and extended family and friends.
