Two Offaly HSE centres win awards

Two Offaly HSE centres were winners in the Irish Healthcare Awards announced on Friday night last.

Birr Community Mental Health Centre and Riada House Day Care Centre, Arden Road, Tullamore, were among eight finalists in the Health Care Centre of the Year Awards in the Irish Healthcare Centre Awards 2014 held in Dublin last Friday night.
Geraldine Goode, Clinical Nurse Manager at the Birr Community Mental Health Centre said: “We are absolutely delighted and thrilled with winning as we are in such a rural setting. It was our first time entering and it’s recognition of the work that we are doing here.
“This win is due to the continual hard work and dedication of all our staff.” 
Birr Community Mental Health which was established in 1990 . 
The centre caters for up to 27,000 between Birr and surrounding catchment area. The average attendance to the day centre is between 25 and 30 service users with an age group ranging of between 29 and 75 years of age.
In 2012 music therapy was introduced in the day centre. What started out with a few and then grew in numbers and a CD was launched as a result. The group was called Kismet 20 and a CD ‘The Sounds of the Silenced’ was launched last year.
HSE Riada House Day Care Centre, Tullamore, are this year's winners in the Irish Healthcare Centre Awards 2014 in the Day Care Centre of the Year Award category in which there were eight finalists. 
Riada House Day Care Centre is a nurse-led service which offers a wide variety of Health and Social care related services.
The  various recreational and diversional activities include music therapy sessions (local musicians give their time and talent), hand massage, hairstyling, Sonas Sessions, hand crafting, Bealtaine projects, Offaly Arts engagement, reminiscence, multigenerational projects, Spiritual Celebrations, skills demonstration, home produce making and gardening.
Seasonal celebrations such as the now locally well known Christmas Craft Market and the Easter Bonnet competition result in the generation of much activity and enthusiasm by the Day Care Clients.
Ms Audrey Wright, Director of Nursing, Riada House Day Care Centre, said that they were honoured to receive this very special award  on behalf of the staff, the people who use the centre and the centre's advocacy group who nominated the centre for the Award.
