Rhode native shortlisted for national award

Rhode native Professor Imelda Coyne and her team at Trinity College Dublin have been shortlisted for a national health literacy award.

Professor Coyne, Peter Thompson, Geraldine Prizeman, Dr Aisling Sheehan and Aileen Cassells from Trinity’s School of Nursing and Midwifery have been shortlisted along with 17 others in the “Best Project in a Hospital” category of the Crysal Clear MSD Health Literacy Awards for outstanding efforts to communicate with patients in a clear way.

Professor Coyne’s project emerged from the findings of a larger project investigating young people, parents and healthcare professional’s experience of the difficult transition from child to adult services.

Their e-health intervention project “Support for Young People with Long-Term Illnesses” focused on Cystic fibrosis, Type 1 diabetes and congenital heart disease.

As part of the project a website - www.SteppingUp - was developed for those aged 13 to 18 who are preparing to move from child to adult healthcare services.

Now in its seventh year, the Crystal Clear MSD Health Literacy Awards this year received 131 entries. Category winners will be announced in Dublin on May 15 next.
