Six Offaly schools to have toilet/roof works carried out this summer

Six Offaly schools are included in a list of 386 announced by Education Minister Ruairi Quinn today (Friday) that are to get a total of €35m for vital school improvements.

Geashill 1 NS, Edenderry Convent NS, Scoil Naisiunta Chiarain Naofa in Shannonbridge, Naomh Mhuire NS in Geashill and Scoil Naisiunta Mhuire and the Sacred Heart Secondary School in Tullamore have all been given the go ahead to upgrade toilets and roofs this summer.

Some 101,000 pupils nationwide are expected to benefit from this round of Summer Works Scheme that will fund 280 primary schools and 106 secondary school nationwide.

It follows an initial announcement in March by Minister Quinn that 386 schools were to get funding to the tune of almost €36m to undertake gas, electrical and mechanical works.

Minister Quinn said the scheme will support an estimated 4,200 direct and 840 indirect construction jobs, and added that work will take place during summer months when pupils are on holidays in order to minimise disruption.
