Edenderry tidy towns unveils canal walkways project

The committee and members of Edenderry Tidy Towns proudly officially launched the opening of its latest project 'Canal Walkways’.
This was phase one of a three-part project, which includes over 2km of resurfaced walkway from the canal harbour down to the Downshire Bridge and on to Colgans Bridge. It’s finished to the highest standard and is now a lovely walk along the canal which is opened only for fishermen, walkers, joggers and cyclists on a lovely smooth and flat surface.
Chairman of Edenderry Tidy Towns Cllr Noel Cribbin said: “This project was carried out by Tidy Towns, in conjunction with Offaly County Council and Inland Waterways, and on behalf of the members I would like to thank Director of Services Declan Conlon, Damien Grennan and John O’Reilly and his outdoor staff in Offaly County Council for all of their help and commitment with this project, in both carrying out the actual work on the canal and to dealing with the paperwork and legal end with Inland Waterways Ireland and lastly to Louis Byrne of Inland Waterways for his help and assistance.
“Since the work was finished on site the amount of people now using the canal has quadrupled and it’s great to see. So now whether you’re after dropping the kids off to school or finishing your day’s work you can take yourself off for a lovely safe walk with nature on the canal bank - all on our doorstep here in town,” added Cllr Cribbin, who also thanked the landowners for their co-operation and locking of gates.
