Anniversary win for offaly couple

Scratch cards Gladys and Bert Alexander from Birr got for their 54th wedding anniversary turned into a whole lot more last weekend.

One of the couple’s lucky tickets was drawn for Winning Streak, and their daughter-in-law Sandra won €44,000 - including a Suzuki Gran Vitara - for them on the game show last Saturday night.

Last Saturday’s show was the ninth of this season’s Winning Streak show presented by Marty Whelan and Sinead Kennedy.

Sandra was joined by players from Waterford, Dublin, Tipperary and Carlow on the night. Jane Whelan from Carlow was the biggest winner of the game, with prizes totalling €64,000. The five contestants together won prizes to the value of €227,000.

Gladys and Bert Alexander have operated a windfarm in Shinrone since 2006. They have four children - Robert, Nigel, Thelman and Evelyn - along with eight grandchildren.

Sandra, who is married to Nigel Alexander and mother to four-year-old Kyle, was delighted to step up to the plate to represent her in-laws and do them proud.

The Alexanders’ winning ticket was bought from Centra on Shinrone’s Main Street.
