Offaly councillor believes safety audit needed at schools

Sinn Fein Councillor Carol Nolan believes a road safety audit should be carried out at all schools across Offaly.

Cllr Nolan received confirmation last week that traffic calming measures will be put in place in Kinnitty village while further safety measures are due to be located at the national school.

“I’m delighted that these measures are being adopted. The residents of Kinnitty were very concerned about the speed of traffic going through the village and had brought the issue to my attention. I submitted a motion appealing for safety measures to be implemented in a meeting of Birr Municipal Council in October. The proposal was subsequently brought to the design team of Offaly County Council and has now been given the go ahead,” she remarked.

Cllr Nolan said “the traffic calming measures being implemented will help to ensure the safety of elderly people who experience great difficulty crossing the busy street in Kinnitty.” The measures being adopted at Kinnitty National School will compliment the safety measures already in place and help to deter speeding motorists and keep children safe, she explained.

“I feel that it is pertinent that safety measures be put in place at all schools in Offaly to protect our children. The carrying out of an audit in relation our schools should be done in order to highlight safety issues that need to be addressed. Money spent on safety measures is always money well spent,” she remarked.
