Motorcyclist detected at 208kph near birr

Gardai detected a motorcyclist travelling at 208 kilometres per hour while overtaking four cars near Birr last Saturday, March 28.  

A motorbike was seized by Gardai who are preparing a file for the DPP in relation to the incident.

Gardai in Birr confirmed there had been an incident where a motorcyclist was stopped on suspicion of dangerous driving between Birr and Kilcormac and “the bike was taken.”

Gardai used their official Twitter account to post a picture of the speed gun which registered 208kph. They also tweeted the following: “Traffic Tullamore stopped M/Cycle@208kph near Birr while overtaking 4 cars.”

The incident occurred after Gardai had completed their 24 hour National Slow Down Day operation from 7am on Friday, March 27 to 7am on Saturday, March 28.  

An Garda Síochána, the Road Safety Authority and other stakeholders thanked the public for their co-operation during operation Slow Down.

They said reports from around the country had indicated that the response to the key message of the initiative - to slow down - was heeded, and there was a visible reduction in speed from the motoring public. Motorists were asked to continue to drive safely, to slow down and to save lives.

During the 24 hour operation, GoSafe checked 104,966 vehicles and detected 454 vehicles speeding. Notable detections amongst the non-compliant motorists were published.

There was only one notable detection  in the Midlands, where a motorist was caught travelling at 122kph in a 100km zone at Ballickmoyler in Co Laois. The highest speed recorded nationwide was at Cratloe in Co Limerick and Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, where on each occasion the motorist were caught driving at 124kph in 100km zone.
