An Offaly teacher has received a prestigious award from the Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland(ASTI).

Birr native Mary Lyndon, a former teacher at St Brendan’s Community School in Birr, received the ASTI Honorary Life Membership in recognition of her exceptional service to the union.

Honorary Life Membership is given to ASTI members who have displayed outstanding leadership qualities and vision as trade union activists.

Mary served in a number of roles in the ASTI at regional and national level including Chair of the Roscrea branch of the ASTI and a member of the ASTI Central Executive Council. Mary also served on the ASTI Education Committee, Community and Comprehensive Committee and Steering Committee.

She was presented with ASTI Honorary Life Membership at a special awards ceremony in Dublin in May.
