New recycling centre to create 10 jobs in Kilbeggan

A newly approved recycling centre in Kilbeggan brings with it the promise of ten new jobs.

KMK Metals Recycling Ltd, who already operate a plant in Tullamore, recently got planning approval for a new factory to recycle metal and electrical equipment on the former Powerscreen site on the Moate Road in the town.

“The proposed KMK Kilbeggan site will be used as a high quality Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) treatment facility,” the planning documents for the project revealed last year, pointing out that items like radiators, laptops, metal fridges,TVs, cyclinders etc will be recycled on-site.

“It is expected that up to ten employees will be present at the site including line operatives, engineers and administration staff,”the company added in the documents, setting out their plans for the 7.7 acre site which has been unused for a number of years. A change of use of the existing building from light industrial to a recycling use was also passed by the local authority to move the plans forward. First lodged earlier this year, further information was subsequently sought from the applicant in connection with the plans before the green light was given earlier this month, subject to twelvedifferent conditions.

Tullamore-based KMK, who operate a site on the Daingean Road, currently recycle over 70% of Ireland’s electronic and electrical waste. The company operate three divisions, the first dealing with metal recycling, the second, a WEEE Recycle service for electrical equipment and electronic goods, and the final element is a battery recycling collection and recycling service for all types of waste batteries. The development requires an EPA Waste Licence.
