Calls to scrap Daylight Savings Time

An MEP is calling for an end to turning back the clocks.

Deirdre Clune, Ireland South MEP said the practice is 'a relic from a bygone era'.

Ms Clune made the comments in the European Parliament saying that brighter evenings would lead to improved outcomes in road safety and reduced energy consumption with the need for less artificial light, and claimed brighter evenings would have a positive effect on health.

Ms Clune made the call ahead of review of the daylight saving changes by EU Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc launched.

Wintertime will officially get under way this weekend when households across the country turn back their clocks by an hour, meaning less daylight in the evenings and more in the mornings.
