Clara man named Offaly Carer of the Year

A Clara man who provides full-time care for his wife was recently named as the 2016 Offaly Carer of the Year.

Martin Bracken, who received his award at a recent ceremony in the Town House in Tullamore, cares for his wife Breeda who has Lewy Body Parkinsons. Prior to Breda’s diagnosis, she looked after everything in the home. Martin has had to take on this role as well as caring for Breeda, who has an extensive medication regime. Martin uses his mobile phone to set alarms to remind him to give Breda her medication.

Lisa Weldon, area manager for Family Carers Ireland says that Martin is a worthy recipient of this year's award.

“We are absolutely delighted that Martin Bracken has been awarded Offaly Carer of the Year 2016.

'Martin is a truly remarkable person, who provides much love and care to his wife Breda. Carers play an absolutely vital role in society, and they are at times the forgotten workforce. The Carers of the Year Awards, present an opportunity to celebrate the dedication and support carers provide to their loved ones every day throughout the year.”

All entries into the Carers of the Year Awards receive a commemorative certificate and the Offaly Carer of the Year 2016,
