The late Aiden Bermingham.

Durrow road accident victim laid to rest

The close knit community of Durrow is in mourning this week after a local man was killed in a road traffic collision in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Aiden Bermingham (26) was walking on the N52 Kilbeggan road when he was struck by a car at approximately 1.40am. The driver of the car was uninjured in the incident.

Mr Bermingham was a member of a well known local family and was attending the National Learning Network Centre in Tullamore at the time of this passing. He is survived by his parents Terry and Eileen and siblings Claire, Irene, Paul and Darren.

Speaking to the Offaly Independent, Cllr Tommy McKeigue extended his sympathies to the Bermingham family. He said that the Berminghams were well respected locally and there was widespread shock at Aiden's tragic death.

“I know the family quite well. They are very big into farming and are part and parcel of the Durrow community. It's very sad and it's going to be a very bleak Christmas for them.

“Your heart would go out to them. The family know nothing but had work and are at the heart of the community.”

In a statement issued to the Offaly Independent, the National Learning Network in Tullamore said that staff and students were “extremely saddened” by the news of Aiden's death.

“Aiden had recently commenced our Fresh Start programme. He was very well liked by students and instructors and will be sadly missed.

“We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere sympathies to Aiden’s family and friends for this terrible loss.'

Mr Bermingham's remains were reposed at his home yesterday evening (Thursday). His Funeral Mass takes place this morning, Friday

December 16, at 11am in St Colmcille's Church, Durrow, with burial taking place in the adjoining ceremony afterwards.

Gardaí in Tullamore, who are investigating the accident, say that a number of witnesses have come forward.

However, as the investigation continues, they are appealing to anyone who may have information and who has not yet come forward to contact them on 057 9327600.
