New €45k outdoor gym ready within weeks

A free to use outdoor gym will be available from the end of May in Tullamore's Lloyd Park.

The Lions Club is sponsoring the modern gym with a spend of €45,000 that will contain twelve pieces of the most modern exercise equipment available.

Everyone over the age of fifteen will be welcome to use it and the gym will be attractive to everyone interested in improving and maintaining their general fitness as well as those interested in specific fitness programs. Some of the pieces of equipment will also be of benefit to wheelchair users.

The equipment for the outdoor gym is being supplied and installed by Kompan, one of the leading manufacturers and suppliers of this type of equipment in Europe. Each piece of equipment will have on it instructions on how to use it to best effect. In addition, users will be able to use a smart phone app to access instructions while they exercise.

This project was chosen by the Lions Club to mark the founding of the club over forty years ago.

“We wanted to mark the occasion by showing our appreciation of the generous support the club has received from the people of Tullamore and surrounding areas over more than four decades now," commented Club President, Pat Lalor. "We wanted to do it in a tangible, practical and beneficial way. A modern outdoor gym will do that. Tullamore people are health and wellness conscious and the gym will add to the many amenities available locally to enable them to realise their goals.

"There is already in the park a well-surfaced perimeter path measuring 0.8 of a kilometer. A walk in the park and exercise in the outdoor gym will make it easy to get in the recommended 30 minutes exercise five times a week."

The Lions Club has received great encouragement and support in the planning and execution of this project from Offaly County Council who have provided the site as well as technical and practical support services, Offaly Local Development Company who are providing a generous grant as well as Offaly Sports Partnership and the HSE who provided valuable advice at the planning stages and will provide support and encouragement to users of the outdoor gym when it is commissioned.

The installation of the outdoor gym is expected to be complete by the end of May, by which time our summer will surely have arrived.
