Number of uninsured motorists spikes in Offaly

The number of uninsured motorists prosecuted in Offaly shot up last year, figures provided to the Longford/Westmeath Deputy, Robert Troy, at Dáil Éireann level last week revealed.

Deputy Troy asked the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Deputy Shane Ross, the number of penalty points that have been issued for driving without insurance in the years 2013 to 2017.

Supplying the information requested, Minister Ross said the figures related to the number of penalty points recorded on the National Vehicle and Driver File (NVDF) for driving without insurance.

The table showed that the figures for Offaly have almost doubled in the five year period. The 2017 figure for Offaly was 94, while the figure for the previous 12 months was just 75. In 2015, there were 60 cases, while in 2013, the figure was as low as 58.
