Investigation underway

Donaghmore/Ashbourne are to carry out their own investigation into a disturbance at their ground during Sunday's A FL Div 1 game against Duleek/Bellewstown.

It is understood that the incident occured between two spectators, one from each club, when they confronted each other in the stand following what was described as "a disturbance" on the pitch between a number of players. Two players, one from each team, received red cards from referee Frank Gallogly.

It is also believed that Gardai were not called to deal with either of the incidents with a number of stewards from the Donaghmore/Ashbourne club instead stepping in to sort out the issues. The confrontation between the supporters was described by one observer as "handbag stuff."

"There was a small incident in the stand between two supporters, but the club stewards on duty had dealt with the incident straight away," said Donaghmore/Ashbourne official Michael Doherty.

"The Gardai were in the vicinity as is the case with all our home games due to the recent thefts in club grounds, but they were not involved with this incident. The club is carrying out an investigation into the cause of the incident."

Duleek/Bellewstown official Oliver Cuddenwas not in a position to comment about the matter.

"I wasn't at the game, so I don't know anything about it," he told the Meath Chronicle.

Donaghmore/Ashbourne's Conor Tormey added that there is always a big contingent of stewards at any games staged at their ground. The game finised with Donaghmore/Ashbourne defeating Duleek/Bellewstown, 1-7 to 1-3.
