Smullen heads to US for Breeders Cup

Offaly jockey Pat Smullen will ride Winchester in this Saturday"s prestigious Breeders Cup race in the United States.

Smullen delayed his departure to the US to ride in three races in Navan this week.

The defending flat jockey champion, Smullen is currently leading the race to claim this year"s crown. The Rhode native has 81 winners to his credit, four ahead of Johnny Murtagh and Fran Berry, who are joint second on 77. Bookmakers rate Smullen as favourite to hold onto his champion jockey title.
