Kevin Williamson..an innocent party in Ardee Celtic's FAI Junior Cup appeal.

Tullamore Town free to continue FAI Cup quest

AN appeal by Ardee Celtic against Tullamore Town FC's continued involvement in this season's FAI Junior Cup has been dismissed following a disciplinary meeting of the competition organisers at FAI headquarters earlier this week. Tullamore defeated Ardee 1-0 in the fifth round a couple of weeks ago, but the Louth outfit later registered an objection. The appeal centred around the name 'Kevin Minnock' featuring on the official match-day card. Tullamore Town FC PRO, Frank Nicholson, this week admitted a mistake had been made by the club, and that the name should have read 'Kevin Williamson', the former Athlone Town player that recently joined Tullamore. "As soon as we realised a mistake was made, we immediately contacted the competition organisers, to make it clear it was a genuine mistake. Kevin Williamson is properly registered as a Tullamore Town player, and once it became clear that was the case, Ardee Celtic's appeal was dismissed," said Nicholson. The club did receive a €100 fine for the mistake, said Nicholson. However, he was at pains to stress the mistake was genuine, and that Williamson is fully registered to play for Tullamore Town in all competitions. Patrick 'Pappy' Ruane's side, who are currently fighting a relegation battle in the Leinster Senior League, but they will be bouyed by the news from the FAI. Tullamore have no fixture this weekend, but will now look forward to continuing their exciting FAI Junior Cup run against Limerick side, Regional Utd (date yet to be announced). The winners will play Carrick Utd (Waterford) in the seventh round (last 16). The final of this year's competition is set to be held at the AVIVA Stadium in Dublin in September.
