Eden' ladies lose out to Riverside but men's team advances in cup

Week 6 was a busy week in the CCFL. Both the Women's and Youths leagues kicked off their season and the first cup ties were played. Despite going a goal down, Riverside ladies got the season off to a flyer with 3-1 win over Edenderry thanks to a double form Christine Claffey and a goal from Roisin Sweeney.

Linda Claffey, Ciara Kelly, Amy Kilduff and Aine Kearns all put in fine defensive displays in front of Riverside keeper Maryann Keena, who produced some great saves to deny Edenderry throughout. In the other ladies match, Mullingar Athletic beat Tullamore 3-1.

In the U17s only one match was played, Portlaoise and Birr shared 10 goals in an incredible 5-5 draw. The U18s had two matches - Killavilla ran out 6-0 winners versus St Aengus and Mountmellick defeated Tullamore 3-1.

It was a successful day for CCFL teams in the FAI Junior Cup with all three competing teams qualifying for the next round. Sean Moore scored in the 2-2 draw between Edenderry and Cavan Town in a match that had to go to penalties; an astonishing 21 penalties were scored with Edenderry eventually going through 11-10 winners.

In the Senior Division, Mullingar Athletic joined Willow Park on 16 points courtesy of a 3-2 win away to Clara, and third placed Monksland took three points at home to Birr. Gallen United moved within two points of top spot in the Premier League, Paddy Moore, Declan Killian, Kieran Kenny and Shane Costello among the goals in a 5-1 win over Rosenallis. A Mark Dunne goal secured a point for CK Utd against Clonaslee.

In the top of the table clash in Division 1, a Stephen Hawking goal was the difference as Abbeyleix came away from Tullamore with all three points.

Only 3 points separate the top six in Division 2. Dynamo Town went top after winning at Gracefield 4-3, Eamon Kelly and Emmett Geoghegan (2) getting the goals for Gracefield. Gary Kelly and Aaron Joyce both scored for Gentex who beat Birr 2-1. Shane Troy and Darren Screeney scored the goals for Kilcormac in their 2-2 at home to Walsh Island.

Raheen made it 4 wins from 4 as they put three past Portlaoise without reply. Abbeyleix entertained Midland Celtic but had to work hard and come back from 2-0 down to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

In 4B, East End Celtic's 100% start to the season continued, JP O'Leary, Keith O'Connor and Jay Melia all scoring against Clonmore in a 3-1 win to keep East End top of the table.
