Five years ago Roddy Shaw from Durrow was performing in Tullamore Musical Society’s version of “Mack and Mabel”.
Though he went on to study zoology and conservation at Bangor University, Roddy never forgot his love for the stage.
Now, along with three college mates, he’s performing nightly as part of the famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival with a sketch show called “Thespianage”.
Speaking to the Offaly Independent the former Tullamore College student who’s now based in Wales said the show’s first night on Monday of this week went well.
“Obviously there are some little bumps to iron out, but there was a good audience,” he said.
The 50-minunte show is running at The Space at Surgeon’s Hall at 8pm every night except Sundays until August 24.
With venue capacity 40, an opening night audience of 25 was good news for those behind the show.
“For our first show and for a new group it was very good,” Roddy said, adding that he’s really enjoying the Edinburgh Fringe Festival experience.
“We all really enjoyed meeting up, writing the sketches and performing,” he said. “If some big producer came along and decided to offer us full-time contracts - or even part-time - we’d jump at it.”
“Thespianage” is performed by Roddy and his friends under the company name “400 Hats”. It was written Roddy and three friends he met when he got involved with drama and comedy at Bangor University, with most work put in since his graduation last year.
“It’s a sketch show,” Roddy said. “There are a variety of sketches, with everything from a useless doctor to a load of clowns going to war and an unemployed Shakespearian actor looking for a job.” To add to the mayhem, throughout the sketch the four performers are being chased and accused of thespianage.
Back in Offaly Roddy’s family - parents John and Wanda and sister Lucy - are based in Durrow.
Locals may also remember Roddy himself from Tullamore Musical Society’s take on “Hello Dolly” in 2007 and “Mack and Mabel” in 2008.
