Third annual fundraiser underway in memory of AIT student from Tullamore

The third annual fundraiser in memory of 19-year-old student Jordan Murphy, who lost his life in a traffic collision in Athlone three years ago, is currently underway and has already raised almost €4,000 for a counselling service in Tullamore.

Jordan, a Tullamore native, was a second year business student in Athlone IT when he died as a result of an accident on the Dublin Road on September 11, 2018.

The annual fundraiser in his memory began in 2019 and, despite the pandemic, it raised over €12,000 last year.

This year's fundraiser was announced last week with a post on The Jordan Murphy Memorial Fundraiser Facebook page.

Online donations are being requested on an iDonate page here, and everyone who makes a contribution will be entered into a draw for a number of attractive prizes that have been kindly donated by businesses.

"Please don't forget that all money raised goes directly to Accessible Counselling Tullamore who are a local, non-profit, non-government funded counselling service providing an invaluable service to our community and beyond," said the Facebook post on behalf of Jordan's relatives and friends.

"Please give what you can and share to all your friends and family."

At the time of writing, just a week after the fundraiser was launched, 125 donations had already been received, amounting to €3,871.

Jordan Murphy was conferred posthumously with a Higher Certificate in Business at a conferring ceremony in Athlone IT in October 2019.

A lover of music and devoted fan of Liverpool FC, he was described by AIT President, Professor Ciarán O Catháin, as a "wonderful, dedicated and personable student who was very much loved and respected by his fellow classmates, our academic faculty and the wider AIT community."
