€100k raised by Coast to Curragh cycle in memory of Pat Smullen

The Coast to Curragh Charity Cycle on Saturday in memory of Pat Smullen raised over €100,000 raised for Cancer Trials Ireland

Members of the late Pat Smullen's family had lent their support to the charity cycle this Saturday, September 25, which will raise vital funds for Cancer Trials Ireland.

The Coast to Curragh charity cycle was held in honour of Pat Smullen, the much-loved flat racing Champion jockey from Rhode who was just 43 years of age when he passed away in September of last year, after a brave battle with pancreatic cancer.

All monies raised from the Coast to Curragh charity cycle are being donated directly to Cancer Trials Ireland.

Eibhlín Mulroe, CEO of Cancer Trials Ireland, said: “We in Cancer Trials Ireland are so grateful to the horse racing community and now the cycling community for everything they have done to support us. Charity donations give us the latitude to open a wider range of trials in the less prevalent forms of cancer. The €2.6m raised by Pat Smullen and the horse racing community has led to four new studies in pancreatic cancer where just two years ago there were none. That’s how real this is for people who get the same diagnosis as Pat, or Gavin’s mother – they have options that simply weren’t available in Ireland before.
