Two vigil events in memory of Ashling Murphy on Friday

Two vigil events in memory of the late Ashling Murphy will take in the county on Friday.

The young teacher and talented musician was fatally injured in an attack while she was out for a run along the Grand Canal towpath, a short distance from Tullamore, on Wednesday around 4pm.

The first event is being held in Tullamore Town Park from 4pm-5pm tomorrow.

Attendees are asked to wear masks and observe social distancing at the event.

Please feel free to bring a candle, the post on the Tullamore Chamber of Commerce Facebook page says.

Meanwhile, a second vigil will take place in Shannon Park in Banagher on Friday at 7pm.

Attendees are asked to gather masked at the steps of the swimming pool and to bring a night light in a jam jar to "show solidarity to Ashling's family at this horrendous time."

The event details were posted online by local Social Democrat Cllr Clare Claffey.

Ashling Murphy of Cully, Blueball, is sadly missed by her heartbroken family Dad Raymond, Mum Kathleen, brother Cathal, sister Amy, aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, neighbours and friends, according to a post on rip.ie.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

The late Ashling Murphy.
