Ideas sought for Eiscir Meadows Green Schools programe

RehabCare Resource Centre in Eiscir Meadows are participating in the Eco Schools Green Schools Programme for the sixth year.

The programme, run by An Taisce, in conjunction with Offaly County Council, is designed to raise students’ awareness of environmental and sustainable development issues.

To date, the RehabCare centre has achieved three green flags for litter and waste, energy and water.

“We are currently working on the travel theme, which will earn our fourth green flag. Part of it is encouraging staff and students in the centre to walk, cycle, scoot, car pool or use public transport to get around daily.

“The committee chose Green for Europe as the Green Code for the travel theme. We are all proud Europeans especially in these turbulent times. Many European countries appear to be very progressive in adopting the green approach, in particular everyday cycling, especially in cities. It is very positive to see an increase in people cycling nowadays in our cities and our countryside and we hope to contribute to that.”

The Green Flag Committee in Eiscir Meadows would like to invite any ideas from fellow Offalians on how to combat climate change and promote sustainability with a local focus.

The best idea will be chosen by the committee, aided by the Green Schools coordinator Lorraine Flanagan and will receive a Humvee cycle helmet for their efforts.
