Three Ulster Bank branches in Offaly may come under threat by the end of the year if fewer than 600 of the bank's employees in the state sign up for a voluntary redundancy programme. The bank confirmed today (Thursday) it is to cut its workforce in Ireland by 950 in total, made up of 600 job losses in the Republic of Ireland and 350 in Northern Ireland.
Speaking to the Offaly Independent Senior Media Manager at Ulster Bank Debbie McCaughey confirmed that the company has no current plans to reduce its branch network and that only voluntary redundancies are being sought at present. However compulsory redundancies have not been ruled out and depend on the level of take-up for the current redundancy scheme. The issue of the size of its branch network around the country going forward is to be kept under review.
Ulster Bank branches are in operation in Edenderry, Ferbane and Tullamore. The company has almost two million customers nationwide and employs approximately 6,000 staff. The bank has blamed the deterioration in local and global economies for job cuts and said current actions are being taken to ensure it can continue to compete effectively in the Irish market.
