“Betsy” is the most common nickname for Irish cars by far. That’s according to a recent AA motor insurance survey of more than 15,400 people, which revealed five times more cars in Ireland are called “Betsy” by their owners than any other nickname.

The second favourite name Irish people have for their car according to the survey is “Baby”, followed by “Bessy”, “Betty” and “Daisy”.

According to the same survey over 24 per cent of motorists in Ireland have at some stage given their car a nickname.

Naming your car seems to be more of a female trait however, with 31 per cent of women having a pet name for their motor compared to just 19 per cent of men.

Other nicknames mentioned in the survey include “Herbie”, “The Beast”, “The Silver Bullet”, “Old Reliable”, “Big Bertha”, “Nellie”, “Wanderly Wagon”, “The Flying Banana” and “Orgasmatron”.

Conor Faughnan of the AA suggested that with cars in Ireland getting older, it’s easy to get sentimentally attached and assign names.
