I grew up in Tullamore and after graduating from St. Columbas College I went to work in the B. Daly distillery in 1950 working in their warehouses and subsequently operating their three pot stills and their recently purchased Patent Still. I left in 1955 when they stopped distilling. Periodically, I check the Offaly Independent and the Midland Tribune to keep up with the local happenings. I was very surprised to see that a book was being published recording the Offaly men who were killed in World War 1. I have a personal interest in this book as I was named Thomas after my uncle Thomas Holohan, of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers who was killed at Gallipoli in 1915. I have asked my brother Fergal McCabe to see if he can get me a copy of this book and hopefully it will provide me with some additional information on my uncle who, of course, I never met. Just in case my brother cannot attend the launching of the book on the 28th I would appreciate all necessary information, price etc. and how I can order it directly. Sincerly, Tom McCabe

    With my compliments.

    regards.

    Tom Burnell;

HOLOHAN, THOMAS. Rank: Pte. Regiment or Service: Royal Dublin Fusiliers. Unit; 1st Battalion. Date of Death:12-July-1915. Service No:16348. Born in Kilbride, King's County. Enlisted in Tullamore, King's County. Killed in Action in Gallipoli. Age at Death;19.

Supplementary information; Son of Thomas and Elizabeth Holohan, of Clonminch Rd., Tullamore, King's Co.

    King's County Chronicle, May 1916.

The call of duty. Private Thomas Holohan, 1st Royal Dublin Fusiliers, youngest son of Mr. Thomas Holohan, Clerk of Petty Sessions, Tullamore, was wounded at Gallipoli on 12th July, 1915, and has since been missing. This brave young fellow was educated at Rockwell College, County Tipperary; an Exhibitioner in the Intermediate course, and the winner of the first prize for an Irish essay at the Philadelphia Féis. He was only eighteen years of age, a bright and very popular young man, but very thoughtful and serious-minded. He was working for his father's office, and was moved by the strong conviction that one of the three brothers should serve his King and Country; but it was in his own ears that the trumpet call of duty was sounding; and with him to hear the call was to obey. In those early days of the war the local corps of volunteers gave many soldiers for the front, reservists and recruits, who were alike played away amid acclaims by their comrades. Young Private Holohan had six months training with the 1st Dublins before meeting the foe in the Near East.

He is also listed on the Tullamore Roll of Honour and says he was killed in Suvla Bay.

Grave or Memorial Reference: He has no known grave but is listed on Panel 190 to 196 on the Helles Memorial in Turkeyrn

You can order the book from any bookshop. Published by the History Press.

The following is what was known as the Tullamore Roll of Honour and often referred to in the book. It was intended to hang in the County Council Offices but as far as I know it was never done.

The following is what was known as the Tullamore Roll of Honour and often referred to in the book. It was intended to hang in the County Council Offices but as far as I know it was never done.

The roll gives a total of 452 of all ranks. Of this number, 159 were serving in the Leinster Regiment; 31 in the Connaught Rangers; 31 in the Royal Dublin Fusiliers; 16 in the Irish Guards; 28 in the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers(sic); 28 in the Royal Field Artillery; 6 in the Royal Garrison Artillery; 5 in the Royal Irish Fusiliers; 13 in the Royal Irish regiment; 7 in the Royal Iriah Rifles; 13 in the R. A. M. C. ; 13 in the A. S. C; 4 in the Army V. Corps; 14 in the Royal Engineers; 18 in Hussar and Lancer regiments; 18 in the South Irish Horse; 7 in the East Lancashire Regiment; 3 in the Manchester regiment; 2 in the Liverpool Regiment; 3 in the South Lancs. ; 4 in the Warwicks; 2 in the Scottish Borderers; 1 in the North Irish Horse; 2 in the Munster Fusiliers; 1 each in the O. The Tullamore Roll of Honour was compiled at the end of 1916 and the beginning of 1917 and so was imcomplete. The casualties after this date are not included in the above list.

    Regards.

    Hello Stephen/.

    That is a good question.

It looks like they are different but it is just a font issue. There is no significance to it at all. If the Edenderry men died in ww1 post their names here.

    Regards.

    Tom.

    Hi,

I was hoping you could shed some light on the following men who died in WW1. I have two bronze plaques with the names ' Michael Tiernan' and 'Joseph Tierney' on them. However these men are both brothers and their surname is Tiernan. They lived in Clara or Kilbeggan. Do you have any information on these men or know where I could find out more information on them? Both medals were produced in the Acton medal factory. the numbers that appear beside the rear leg of the lion are 47 and 19. I would be very grateful for any light you may be able to shed on these men. My father was given the medals years ago.

    Kind Regards

    Olivia

Rfn Patrick Lynch of Daingean, 14Bn Royal Irish Rifles was initially listed by the CWGC as being killed in may 1916 in France, after some research we discovered he died in Passchendale 16 Aug 1917 in the 3rd battle of Ypres. We managed to get the CWGC database changed. My grandfathers uncle, he wanted to see the memorial but it's in the wrong country.

In the readout I received from The Commonwealth War Graves Commission in February 2009 it gives the date of death as April 13-1916. This date of death was also recorded in Soldiers died in the Great War and Irelands Memorial Records. If it was yourself that had it changed then it must have been after February-2009. You must have been able to convince the CWGC of the error or they would not have changed it. This newspaper article ;-

    King’s County Independent, July, 1918.

    Regretted Death.

At the Masses in Philipstown Catholic Church on Sunday last, prayers were asked for the repose of the soul of Private Patrick Lynch, who died in France. Officially reported missing some twelve months ago, it is only now that his fate has been ascertained. A mere youth when he joined the army, Patrick Lynch was very popular with all classes, being a most obliging and winning disposition, and his early death fighting for freedom is universally regretted. May he rest in peace.

    Confirms your claim.

    Kind regards.

    Tom.

    Hi

I find your book fasinating and very informative. It fills in a list of brave men who fought in the First World War and who hailed from Offaly. Have you the list of dead from the Daingean Area ?

    Thanks

Too broad a question, Joe. If you search you will find the word Daingean 4 times in the book. If you post all the townlands in the Parish of Daingean we can begin, as a Daingean townland may be listed without the parish name.

Those four 'Daingean' names are Brennan, Thomas, Ferry Joseph, Lynch Patrick and Monks, John.

    Hi

I have been trying without success to get details of my great grandfather, Joseph Hogan, during WWI. I have been to the Imperial War Museum in London but the Joseph Hogan they had listed had the right parents but came from Galway??? Would you have any suggestions as to how I might get his correct regiment or unit? Or even if he did actually sign up for the war??

The only information I have been able to collect so far which I know is correct is that he was born in Tullamore, Co. Offaly in 1891 (baptised 2nd March 1891) and his parents were Thomas Hogan and Mary Freer who lived at 7 Kevin Street, Tullamore.

All I know and have always been told was that my grandmother was orphaned when her father was killed in WWI and her mother (Martha Hogan nee Geraghty) died (possibly of TB).

Any suggestions to assist in finding Joseph Hogan would be greatly appreciated.

Here are the Joseph Hogans I have found in the counties covered so far, which are Tipperary, Waterford, Wicklow, Wexford, Clare, Carlow, Laois, Laois, Limerick, Kerry, and Offaly.

HOGAN, JOSEPH. Rank: Stoker 2nd Class. Regiment or Service: Royal Navy. Unit: H. M. S. "Defence. ” Age at death; 21. Date of Death: 31-May-1916. Service No: K/29031. H. M. S. Defence was an armoured cruiser and was sent to the bottom by the Naval guns of a German battleship during the battle of Jutland. H. M. S. Defences magazine exploded when it was hit by a German shell. The magazine explosion triggered off other explosions which almost blew the ship apart and she went down with the entire crew of 903 men. There were no survivors. 5 Waterford men died with this ship on that day. Supplementary information; Son of Michael and Mary Hogan, of Knock, Dungarvan, Co. Waterford. Grave or Memorial Reference: 16 on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, UK.

HOGAN, JOSEPH. Rank: Private. Regiment or Service: Royal Irish Regiment. Unit; 5th Bn. Date of Death: 18-9-1915. Service No: 4888. Born in Killen Co Tipperary. Enlisted in Naas while living in Birr. Died in Salonika. Age at Death, 24. Supplementary information; Son of Thomas and Mary Hogan, of Killimore, Co. Galway.

Grave or Memorial Reference: He has no known grave but is listed on the Doiran Memorial in Greece.

I presume the Killimore should be Killimor. His parents were LIVING in Killimor when they filled out the letter of final verification and sent it to the CWGC with his details. This usually happened around 1922.

On Ancestry.com you should be able to get his Medal index card which will show you his name rank, number, unit, and the date he first entered the theatre of war and which one that was. If his records survived the Luftwaffe bombing in ww2 they should be there also. You can search by area and name. You really need his unit or number as there were 45 Joseph Hogans in the British Army in ww1. The Joseph above who was killed in 1915

I wish you the best of luck with your quest.

    Some info on the Doirna Memorial;

The DOIRAN MEMORIAL stands roughly in the centre of the line occupied for two years by the Allies in Macedonia, but close to the western end, which was held by Commonwealth forces. It marks the scene of the fierce fighting of 1917-1918, which caused the majority of the Commonwealth battle casualties. From October 1915 to the end of November 1918, the British Salonika Force suffered some 2,800 deaths in action, 1,400 from wounds and 4,200 from sickness. The campaign afforded few successes for the Allies, and none of any importance until the last two months. The action of the Commonwealth force was hampered throughout by widespread and unavoidable sickness and by continual diplomatic and personal differences with neutrals or Allies. On one front there was a wide malarial river valley and on the other, difficult mountain ranges, and many of the roads and railways it required had to be specially constructed. The memorial serves the dual purpose of Battle Memorial of the British Salonika Force (for which a large sum of money was subscribed by the officers and men of that force), and place of commemoration for more than 2,000 Commonwealth servicemen who died in Macedonia and whose graves are not known. The memorial was designed by Sir Robert Lorimer with sculpture by Walter Gilbert. It was unveiled by Sir George Macdonogh on 25 September 1926. The memorial stands near DOIRAN MILITARY CEMETERY. The cemetery (originally known as Colonial Hill Cemetery No.2) was formed at the end of 1916 as a cemetery for the Doiran front. The graves are almost entirely those of officers and men of the 22nd and 26th Divisions and largely reflect the fighting of April and May 1917 (the attacks on the Petit-Couronne), and 18-19 September 1918 (the attacks on Pip Ridge and the Grand-Couronne). In October and November 1918, after the final advance, a few burials were added by the 25th Casualty Clearing Station. After the Armistice, graves were brought into the cemetery from the battlefields and from some small burial grounds, the most important of which was Strumnitza British Military Cemetery, north-west of Doiran, made by the 40th Casualty Clearing Station in October and November 1918. The cemetery now contains 1,338 Commonwealth burials of the First World War, 449 of them unidentified. There are also 45 Greek and one French war graves.
