Tullamore library to be officially opened today

Tullamore's refurbished library is to be officially opened today (Monday). Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government Phil Hogan will do the honours at a ceremony planned for 2pm. Speaking to the Offaly Independent county librarian Mary Stuart said the new library, which has been open to the public since August 2012, has proven a huge hit. Since its opening some 72,000 visits have been made by users, with 60,000 books, DVDs and games issued on loan. The new library has also attracted new customers, with 4,500 new members signing up since its re-opening. Library users can now enjoy an open plan library in Tullamore with access to a dedicated local history area, a multi purpose ICT and e-learning space, community meeting areas, outdoor reading and event spaces, study areas and improved child and teen spaces. The library carries a collection of 39,000 items aimed towards children, teens and adults. A new digital collection includes local newspapers, e-books and e-audiobooks. The new library also has amended opening hours. The service now opens 48 hours each week Monday to Saturday, with opening hours including lunch times and evenings. The library has also made the move to self-service with a smart kiosk, and it's reported that some 70 per cent of library transactions in Tullamore are now self-service.
