Truckers to get toll holiday in November

A toll holiday for truckers on the M1, M3 and M6 motorways as well as the Limerick Tunnel for the month of November, which has been announced by Transport Minister Leo Varadkar, will preserve country roads and relieve congestion in north Offaly towns according to Offaly TD Marcella Corcoran Kennedy.

Speaking today (Tuesday) Deputy Corcoran Kennedy said the trial toll free period for truckers will encourage HGVs onto motorways and off smaller roads.

'The situation over the last number of years has been intolerable, with HGVs avoiding the motorways so as not to pay the toll and instead travelling on country roads through towns and villages in northern Offaly,' she said.

'This has led to traffic congestion, causing a huge inconvenience to locals who are trying to go about their daily business but are prevented from doing so due to large HGVs blocking roads. These vehicles are also causing local roads to degrade at a faster rate due to the increased and heavier traffic load.'
