Offaly arrest in connection with Waterford assault

One of two men aged 20 and 22 arrested in Kilcormac and Portlaoise yesterday (Sunday) afternoon in connection with a serious assault in Waterford city just after midnight yesterday has been released without charge, while the second remains in custody this morning.

A file in relation to the 20-year-old who was released without charge last night will now be prepared for the information of the DPP.

The assault being investigated saw a 22-year-old man brought to Waterford General Hospital in an unconscious state, and later taken to Cork University Hospital where his condition was described as critical.

Gardai in Waterford yesterday appealed for witnesses to the incident or for anyone who may have information to make contact. According to a statement this morning their investigations into the incident are continuing.
