Egans from Belmont take on Fittest Family challenge

THERE will be much local interest when Ireland’s Fittest Family returns to the television screens this weekend as the Egans from Belmont are one of the competing families.
The GAA-loving family are hoping that they can claim plaudits in this year’s competition which will be shown on RTE One television on Sunday at 6.30pm.
They will face several challenges and tough obstacles which they hope they can overcome along the way in the exciting and challenging competition. They are among 12 families taking part this year.
Kieran (51) is joined by his sons Colin (27) and Jack (19) and daughter Roisin (18).
They are well-known in sporting circles; Colin is the current Offaly senior hurling captain, while Jack is on the county under-21 football team. He was named the Offaly junior footballer of the year last year.
Roisin is also a household name in GAA circles and was named Offaly Ladies Footballer of the Year this year.
Their dad Kieran cycles to and from work every day, a total of 26km! He can list as an achievement the ability to perform more than 40 chin-ups in a row!
Colin, like the rest of the family, is looking forward to the competition.
“The lads in the Offaly team have no idea we have signed up to fittest family. So the pressure is on to do well,” he says.
The first qualifiers will be shown live on Sunday, from Tough Mudder in Meath. Six of the 12 families will take part in the first show. Along with the Egans, they are the
Hollands and the Martizs from Dublin, the McCarthys from Clare, the Bailys from Cork and the Mullins family from Limerick.
Four of the six families will make it through the first round, with two set to leave the competition at the first hurdle.
The show is hosted by Mairead Ronan and the coaches are Davy Fitzgerald, Stephen Hunt, Anna Geary and Alan Quinlan.
The overall winners will receive a cash prize of €15,000 and the title of Ireland’s Fittest Family 2016.
