Fundraising concert for Edenderry Disability Group

To raise much needed funds for the Edenderry Disability Group, the Edenderry Entertainers Commemorative Committee have organised a concert that takes place tomorrow night, Friday October 28.

O’Byrne’s Lounge will host this at 9pm and the music will be provided by local artists. All money raised will be for the Wednesday Cabin Disability Club.

The Edenderry Disability Group was established over 13 years ago and is supported by the development worker with Offaly Local Development Company, Nick Foley. The group aims to identify the needs of people with limited mobility or physical and sensory disabilities and to empower them to avail of the opportunities and supports to increase their social participation and independence.

The group are passionate about creating an awareness of the rights and the needs of disabled people among policy makers, service providers and the public. During the summer, the club visited Dail Eireann to meet with elected representatives and discuss issues of concern for disabled people. This visit was very empowering, important and worthwhile.

The group meets every week in the Community Cabin and enjoys learning new skills and working together. Each individual member enjoys the friendship and loyal support of the group and together they endeavour to overcome obstacles and ensure that their voice is heard at a local level. The group are supported and receive finance through Offaly Local Development Company, which allows for the on-going training and learning initiatives undertaken by the club’s members.

Over the years the club have had a number of training and skills courses incorporating subjects from jewellery making to computers. However, arts and crafts is the main activity under the instructor Margriet Schouwenberg. For over six years, the group has hosted their annual pre-Christmas Craft Fayre in Edenderry displaying and selling gifts and crafts made during the year at the weekly meetings.

All these items are bespoke, beautiful and enhance any home or Christmas table. This year, the Craft Fayre is planned for the first Friday in December.
The club appreciate all the help and support provided by agencies, support workers, volunteers and our many friends and associates. Please buy a ticket or attend on the evening.
