Search continues for missing man in Edenderry

Searches are ongoing for missing 26-year-old Latvian national Edgars Leimanis who disappeared from Edenderry on March 31 last.

Gardaí say extensive searches have been carried out in the vicinity in recent weeks, but have yielded no results.

Members of the Laois/Offaly Civil Defence joined members of An Garda Síochána last week, carrying out searches on foot.

Extensive manpower has been deployed by Gardaí, involving members of the Garda Sub Aqua Unit who combed stretches of the Grand Canal in Edenderry, the Mounted Unit on horseback, and the Dog Unit, with the Air Support Unit carrying out low-flying search operations.

"We will be mounting further searches with the Civil Defence next week, but our members are actively looking for any clues and are again appealing to the public for any information," a garda spokesperson told the Offaly Independent this week.

When asked if foul play may have been involved, Sgt Kevin Quinn said there was no evidence to suggest that.

"There is no indication from anyone that any incident may have led to his death. He simply walked out of the estate on the Saturday night and no trace has been seen of him since."

The last confirmed sighting of the Latvian man was when he left the house where he was staying with friends Newberry Close, Edenderry, to go for a walk, at approximately 11pm on the Saturday night.

It's believed that Edgars was booked on a flight home on April 4 but failed to show up.

Edgars is understood to have both family living in Latvia and the UK, but they have received no contact from the 26-year-old, who was previously employed at Moyvalley Meats in Kildare.

He is described as 6'2" in height, short brown hair and strong build. He was wearing a grey jacket and dark chino type trousers.

Gardaí are concerned for Edgars and asking anyone with any information in relation to his whereabouts to contact Edenderry Garda Station on 046 9731290, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
