National silver medals for two Harriers U-10 athletes

Cormac Izuchukwu and Ciaran Mulligan performed brilliantly at the Woodies DIY sponsored National Juvenile Championships in Templemore recently to take the silver medals in the Boys U-10 500m. The competition for Under 9, 10 and 11 athletes sees two athletes per team combine and their times are added together to get a result. Cormac ran a brilliant race to cross the line first in 83.68 seconds and that proved to be the fastest time of the day when both the heats were run off. Ciaran also ran a great race to clock 106.24 seconds and the boys were delighted to receive their first ever national medals. Muireann McDaid and Zoe Murray combined to finish an excellent fourth in the Girls U-11 Long Jump, with Muireann jumping 3.45 meters and Zoe jumping 3.34 meters. Amy Cuskelly (10.43 secs) and Rebecca Sweeney (11.43 secs) both ran extremely well to finish fifth team in the Girls U-9 60m sprint. Zoe Murray (2:03.26) and Sarah Bracken (2:04.69) both showed huge grit and determination in the Girls U-11 600m to take sixth place. Aaron Stones (10.04 secs) and Lorcan O"Reilly (10.32 secs) came 13th team in the Boys U-10 60 meters and they will have gained valuable experience for the future. Hannon Wins in Cork City Sports Fearghus Hannon had a fine win in the 400m B race at the Cork City Sports in the Mardyke Arena on Saturday last. Running in lane seven he passed his training partner, Alan Whelan (Portlaoise), who was in lane eight, after 150 metres as they ran into a strong headwind on the back straight. Hannon then powered away from his rivals in the finishing straight, as he came home to win in 49.17 seconds, with Eoin Mulhall (Naas) second in 49.70 seconds. Later in the day, Fearghus ran the 4 x 400m relay for the Irish junior team and ran a great leg to hand over the baton in the lead ahead of the Irish Senior team. The senior team eventually managed to beat the junior team by 2.5 seconds as the junior team (which included Alan Whelan) clocked 3:21.73, a fine time in wet and windy conditions.
