St Rynagh's girls complete five-in-a-row

GAA: Offaly Under 16 Girls Football Final

St Rynagh's played Edenderry at O'Connor Park in Tullamore in the county final last Sunday. Yet again these teams met as both won their semi-finals respectively.

The Rynagh's girls were probably the favourites to win the final as they had topped their group in the under 16 championship. However, a final was a final and anything could happen, so the Rynagh's girls knew that they had to reproduce some the form they had shown throughout the year.

From the throw-in the midfielders battled for possession and the Rynagh's girls produced their first point with a collection of great passes. The next few minutes were tit for tat and the girls from Rynagh's fought to keep possession and they tried eagerly to dominate play.

The girls played against a strong wind in the first half and gathered momentum as the half went on.

The Edenderry girls got a few scores of their own but the Rynagh's girls came back with reply. The first half seemed to fly by and at the half time whistle the Rynagh's girls were up by only one points with a score line of 0-6 to 0-5.

The game really got going in the second half. Each team delivered fantastic pin point scores and great finishing. The crowd were witnessing something special as the game went from side to side. As one team scored the other dually replied. The game stopped and started from various injuries but as the game became more and more nearing its finish the Rynagh's girls looked the better team. They were decisive on most occasions with great team play. They continued to pass to their team mates and they dually found gaps in the Edenderry defence.

From the goalie up the girls from Rynagh's were up for this battle. And it certainly became a battle. Some of the girls for the All-Ireland Feile winning team showed how much they have come on since last year. They rallied the team and showed a glittering amount of remarkable skill and talent.

The final whistle blew and the girls from Rynagh's had won on a score line of 4-10 to 2-10. From onlookers this game was packed with everything. It had produced a total of 6-20 which might I add is a remarkable score line for any game.

However, this was a day for history to be made.

St. Rynagh's have now won the under 16 A Championship five years in a row. Forget about Kilkenny and what they have achieved, this is truly unbelievable and great credit has to go to the Rynagh's mentors who continue to reproduce great teams. This five-in-a-row will hardly be ever witnessed again and hats off to the Rynagh's girls past and present who keep the Rynagh's Ladies Football Club on top of the pile in Offaly.

Up the Rynagh's!
